Fighting Federal Drug Trafficking Charges
Federal Drug Trafficking
Federal Drug Trafficking Defense in Michigan
We have an extensive amount of experience in defending people charged with trafficking large amounts of narcotics in the Eastern District of Michigan. Most federal drug trafficking prosecutions in the Eastern District of Michigan take place in the Detroit Federal Court. Although a sizable amount of these cases take place within the City of Detroit, in recent years we have found that drug trafficking conspiracies take place throughout the Metro Detroit suburbs. For example, we recently handled a drug trafficking conspiracy involving hundreds of kilograms of cocaine where our client was accused of purchasing these narcotics from the Southwest United States and having said drugs shipped up via air using human mules. The defendants in that case lived all throughout Southeast Michigan, including Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb County.
Federal Drug Charges Carry Serious Penalties
Federal drug trafficking crimes in Michigan carry the potential for severe sentences and include hefty mandatory minimums. For example, 21 USC §841(b)(1)(A) requires a mandatory prison sentence of ten years incarceration if the person is convicted of trafficking one kilogram heroin, five kilograms cocaine, or 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine. And this is can only get worse if the Government seeks an 851 enhancement if the person has a prior serious drug felony.
